Industrial Engineering - Definitions

Industrial engineering directs the efficient conduct of manufacturing, construction, transportation, or even commercial enterprises of any undertaking, indeed in which human labor is directed to accomplishing any kind of work . Industrial engineering has drawn upon mechanical engineering, upon economics, sociology, psychology, philosophy, accountancy, to fuse from these older sciences a distinct body of science of its own . It is the inclusion of the economic and the human elements especially that differentiates industrial engineering from the older established branches of the profession (Going, 1911) [1].

“Industrial engineering is the engineering approach applied to all factors, including the human factor, involved in the production and distribution of products or services.” (Maynard, 1953) [2]

“Industrial engineering is the design of situations for the useful coordination of men, materials and machines in order to achieve desired results in an optimum manner. The unique characteristics of Industrial Engineering center about the consideration of the human factor as it is related to the technical aspects of a situation, and the integration of all factors that influence the overall situation.” (Lehrer, 1954) [3]

“Industrial engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of men, materials, and equipment. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.” (AIIE, 1955). [4]

"Industrial engineering may be defined as the art of utilizing scientific principles, psychological data, and physiological information for designing, improving, and integrating industrial, management, and human operating procedures." (Nadler, 1955) [5]

“Industrial engineering is that branch of engineering knowledge and practice which

1. Analyzes, measures, and improves the method of performing the tasks assigned to individuals,

2. Designs and installs better systems of integrating tasks assigned to a group,

3. Specifies, predicts, and evaluates the results obtained.

It does so by applying to materials, equipment and work specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical and physical sciences and the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design. Since, however, work has to be carried out by people; engineering knowledge needs to be supplemented by knowledge derived from the biological and social sciences.” (Lyndall Urwick, 1963) [6]

Industrial engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. [7]

“Industrial Engineering is Human Effort Engineering. It is an engineering discipline that deals with the design of human effort in all occupations: agricultural, manufacturing and service. The objectives of Industrial Engineering are optimization of productivity of work-systems and occupational comfort, health, safety and income of persons involved.” (Narayana Rao, 2006) [8]

Definition proposed in this knol.

"Industrial Engineering is Human Effort Engineering and System Efficiency Engineeering. It is an engineering discipline that deals with the design of human effort and system efficiency in all occupations: agricultural, manufacturing and service. Environmental Value Engineering - A Cost Reduction Technique

Accodring to Roundebush, environmental value engineering evaluates the environmental contribution and impact of built environment alternatives in units of solar EMERGY during the alternative's life cycle.

EMERGY is defined by Roundebush as all the available energy that was used in the work of making a product, including environmental impacts relating to inputs of: environment, fuel energy, goods, and services (labor). EMERGY is expressed in standard units of energy called solar emjoules (SEJ).

The methodology incorporates 10 life cycle phases of man-made products.

A. natural resource formation,
B. natural resource exploration and extraction,
C. material production,
D. design,
E. component production,
F. fabrication/construction,
G. use,
H. demolition,
I. natural resource recycling, and
J. disposal.

Admission Process for USA Undergraduate Engineering Course

Most US colleges and universities require SAT exam results, a personal statement, a transcript, and letters of recommendation.

MIT Application Process

The application deadline for all international students is January 1 of the year in which you hope to enroll; all incoming freshmen enter in September. The freshman application form is the same for all applicants, international or domestic (there is no separate international application form).

It means to join in September 2010, you have to apply by 1 st January 2010

The application consists of the following components:

Biographical Information Form - Part 1 of the two-part application for freshman admission should be completed and returned immediately.

Essays, Activities, and Tests Form - Part 2 of the two-part application for freshman admission should be returned as soon as possible, but no later than January 1. One long and two short essays are required.

Standardized Tests - Testing must be completed by the January test date. These dates change each year and are set by the testing agency. Click here for specifics on our testing requirements.

Two Teacher Evaluation Forms - Evaluation A is to be completed by a math or science teacher, Evaluation B is to be completed by a humanities, social science, or language teacher. It is your responsibility to provide us with an official English translation of any evaluations not completed in English, in addition to the original untranslated document.

Secondary School Report Form - This form, which includes your school transcript, is to be completed by a guidance counselor or principal/headmaster. If your school offers predicted grades for the IB or A Levels, this should be included in the Secondary School Report Form. It is your responsibility to provide us with an official English translation of any letters or transcripts not written in English, in addition to the original untranslated document.

Interview - The interview is conducted by an MIT graduate in the applicant's home area. If available, you should contact your interviewer by the December 10th before your application deadline.

Mid-year Grade Report Form - If you are not attending a U.S. or U.S.-based school system, you are not required to complete this form. It will appear on your MyMIT application tracking system as it does for all applicants, but it is not a required piece of the application if you are not attending a U.S. or U.S.-based school system.

It is your responsibility to ensure that all components of the application reach MIT. You can view which components that MIT has received via the online tracking system at MyMIT.

Testing Requirements
(We refers to MIT)

Non-native English speakers have two options, which we consider equivalent. We have no preference between these options. It is your choice, and you should take the set of tests with which you feel the most comfortable:

Option 1: SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Plus Writing; and two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).

Option 2: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); and two SAT Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). This option is especially recommended for students who do not speak English at home or in school, or who have been speaking English for fewer than five years.
Native English speakers must take either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Plus Writing; and two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).

All students must meet the testing requirements. You may not substitute other exams (such as IB, A Levels, etc.) for the above testing requirements. Students from countries where the SAT and ACT are not offered (such as Iran and the People's Republic of China) will be considered without a full set of required test scores on a case-by-case basis.

We have no minimum or recommended scores for the SAT Reasoning Test, the ACT Plus Writing, or the SAT Subject Tests. You may wish to view testing statistics from the most recent admissions cycle here).

However, we do have minimum and recommended scores for the TOEFL. These minimums are in place to ensure your level of English proficiency. Because MIT offers no English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, and English is the language of MIT, all students must show that they will thrive in our community. The minimum TOEFL scores are:

----------------------Minimum--Recommended
Paper Based Test (PBT)- 577------ 600+
Computer Based Test (CBT)- 233---- 250+
Internet Based Test (iBT) - 90----- 100+

Your scores must be reported to us officially from the testing agency; scores you list on your application and scores appearing on your school transcript will not be considered official. We recommend you list MIT as a school to receive your scores when you take the test. If you take the January test, you must list MIT as a school to recieve your scores or we will not receive your scores in time for our review. Our SAT and TOEFL code is 3514 and our ACT code is 1858.

It is important for all students - and very important for international students - to register for tests with the same name as you have indicated on your application and MyMIT account. Your record and test scores will not be linked in our system if the names do not match.

You can get more information and register for the SAT tests online at www.collegeboard.com, the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) at www.ets.org/toefl, and the ACT at www.act.org.

B-School Plaments - 2009 - Placement Consultants to be Involved

India has around 1,500 B schools with around 150,000 students graduating per year.

Placements for the year 2009 started in many B schools in November. But several of the good top Tier II institutes are yet to place even half the batch.

They are now approaching placement consultants. IMT, Nagpur, Goa Institute of Management etc. are some of them.

The Head Hunters India Pvt. Ltd. and MaFoi Management Consultants Ltd are some of the firms approached by B-schools. Naukri.com is in the business now with firstnaukri.com and many B-school students have registered with it.

Tips for Revision - Board Examinations - January - March

Today (24 Jan 2009) Mint paper carried an article titled Tricks from Tutors.
You may find it on www.livemint.com

Some suggestions

If you are academically bright student, the next couple of weeks is the time for you to concentrate on concepts that you have not revised earlier. Don't waste time revisiting waht you alread know.

Weaker students have to revise what they know and perfect that.

If you have to appear for competitive examinations, devote 20% of time to prepare for these examinations until mid-February.

5 R's for success: Reorganize, Revise, Rest, Relax and Reassure

Reorganize: Collect and organize you study material for each retrieval.

Connect the course content to everyday ideas to have a greater recall. Try acronyms, mnemonics, rhymes that associate with the concepts.

I personally advocate somebody in the family asking some questions everyday. When you are not able to answer, revise the topic and natural association between that event and the topic will be there.

First understand and then memorize. If you memorize without understanding, examination anxiety may prevent you from recollecting it.

Practice writing answers and attempt some mock tests. It will tell you how much time you are taking to write answers.

Have a timetable for a day, but be flexible around it. Don't get stressed. You may stretch on a day or slightly relax on another day. Stay refreshed and start everyday with enthusiasm.
