Where did and how did Ekalavya and Karna learned their military craft and challenged Arjuna?

Indian religious books created examples of Ekalavya and Karna to preach to people to keep making effort despite the lack of obvious necessary things.

IIM-Lucknow increases student intake, course fee

The Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow (IIM-L) will admit 330 students for its two-year management programmes starting in the new academic year. It has also increased the course fee by Rs.50,000 a year.

'We are taking 30 students more this time in the postgraduate programme (PGP),' IIM-Lucknow director Devi Singh told IANS in an interview.

'Of the 330 students, 300 will be for the famous PGP on management and 30 in our agribusiness programme. This is the highest intake by any IIM so far,' he said.

Singh said the student intake had increased from 240 in 2004. 'Similarly, the intake in fellow programme in management has increased.'

Speaking about the preparedness to meet the extra intake and accommodate a possible 27 percent quota for other backward class students (if the Supreme Court gives a go ahead), he said the institute had spent Rs.600 million in building new infrastructure.

'The expenditure was done in last four years. IIM-Lucknow currently has about Rs.650 million in liquid investments as corpus, endowment funds and special purpose funds,' the 55-year-old professor said.

India has decided to implement 27 percent quota for OBC students in all government aided institutes of higher learning but the Supreme Court has stayed the government order for the time being.

Following the example of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore and IIM-Kolkata, the 22-year-old top B-School here too has increased its course fee.

'We have increased the course fee by just Rs.50,000. This definitely is much lesser than (the hike by) our three other business schools,' he added.

Fees for the first year for students joining IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Kolkata will be Rs.300,000 from the coming academic year, against Rs.200,000 now.

Similarly, IIM-Bangalore has increased the fee from Rs.250,000 for a year to 400,000.

Currently, India has seven IIMs including the yet to start IIM-Shilong. The new institute will open with the coming academic year.

Singh said the institute had given scholarship to meritorious but needy students. In 2007-08 IIM-Lucknow gave scholarships worth Rs.4.8 million to 86 of its students.

Organizing, Retaining and Recollecting Knowledge

Certificates will not perform, only the knowledge that is retained will perform.

In the interviews, it is important to note that many candidates do not even remember the courses that they gone through and text books they used to learn the subjects. So where is the question of issues that they have learned?

There have to be systems that help students to organise the subjects of course for retaining and recollecting knowledge. The textbooks are bulky and hence cannot be retained for many years. Some books for revision have to be created at various class levels and may be at discrete levels. Up to SSC level, intermediate level and bachelors level, PG levels etc.

Then people can refer such books and recollect more detailed things that they studied in detailed text books.

Interesting

The interview descriptions in various forums is useful to provide pointers to aspirants. Also they make the interview process more rigourous. The interview panel members cannot afford to be casual.

My personal recommendation to the MBA institutes is to start having separate interviews for academic knowledge and personality assessment.

I find even the best of students very weak in replying to any question related to any subject in the degree they obtained. It is a very pathetic state. Because of this they find it difficult to absorb knowledge as postgraduate students.

There has to be some change in selection processes to direct the attention of students to retaining the core of the knowledge that they are obtaining in their formal education.

Certificates will not perform, only the knowledge that is retained will perform.

Professor J. K. Shah is the founder of the Institution, “J. K. Shah Classes”. He is a Chartered Accountant by Qualification but started his career in teaching profession immediately upon his qualification in 1983 and today Professor J.K. Shah is one of the most prominent and respected professors in the field.

He established the institution in 1985 when he found a big void of organized teaching for the aspiring students pursuing the course of Chartered Accountant.

In the early days he commenced the teaching only for C.A. students, however he always meant advancing the spread to penetrate the complete value chain of commerce education to fill the void in a seamless and integrated manner under the umbrella of the Institution.

He has steered the organization for last more than 20 years and have emerged as a “synonym” for teaching the students of commerce for degree courses and C.A. examinations.

His innovative ideas, disciplined & dedicated approach and ability to practice these attributes at the institution have created milestones of excellence in the field of commerce education.

All the professors at J.K.Shah Classes are well qualified, expert and have specialized domain knowledge in their subject of teaching.

Modular Employable Skills Program/Scheme

Ministry of Labour and Employment launched a new scheme MES Training

See www.dget.gov.in/mes

Only about 2.5 million vocational training seats are available in the country whereas about 12.8 million persons enter the labour market every year. Even out of these training places, very few are available for early school dropouts. This signifies that a large number of school drop outs do not have access to skill development for improving their employability. The educational entry requirements and long duration of courses of the formal training system are some of the impediments for a person of low educational attainment to acquire skills for his livelihood. Further, the largest share of new jobs in India is likely to come from the unorganized sector that employs up to 93 per cent of the national workforce, but most of the training programmes cater to the needs of the organized sector.

Hon’ble Minister of Finance during the budget speech 2005-06 made the following announcement:

“ To meet the demand for specific skills of a high order, a Public Private Partnership between Government and Industry is proposed to promote skills development programme under the name ‘Skill Development Initiative’….”.

Accordingly, Ministry of Labour & Employment undertook development of a new strategic framework for skill development for early school leavers and existing workers, especially in the un-organised sector in close consultation with industry, micro enterprises in the un-organised sector, State Governments, experts and academia which was essential considering their educational, social and economic background. The main objective of the scheme is to provide employable skills to school leavers, existing workers, ITI graduates, etc. Existing skills of the persons can also be tested and certified under this scheme. Priority will be given to covering those above the age of 14 years who have been or withdrawn as child labour to enable them to learn employable skills in order to get gainful employment. it is hoped that this website will help in dissemination of the information about the scheme and bring transparency. It will also helpful in getting valuable feedback from stakeholders and public at large.

Vocational Training Providers (VTPs)

The training under SDI scheme will be provided by various VTPs under Central Government, State Governments, Public and Private Sector and Industrial establishments. VTPs will provide counselling & vocational guidance, training facilities as per norms, impart good quality training, post training support to trainees in getting employment, maintain data base on trainees trained and the outcome of the training. They will track the trainees for three years or till they get gainfully employed. VTP will also be required to have close networking with the industry for immediate placement of the trainees. They will also maintain accounts, ensure proper utilisation of funds and submit reports and utilisation certificates as per prescribed schedule. They will follow various instructions issued by the committees or any other authority from time to time. All VTPs should have necessary powers to collect the training fee from trainees. They should utilise fee collected and funds received from DGET for meeting various expenses for imparting training and providing post training support services. They should also have powers to reimburse training fee to successful trainees out of funds received from DGET. All VTPs must have a broad band internet connection.

Criteria for selection of VTPs

q Following categories of Educational and Training Institutes having requisite facilities for conducting training courses would be eligible for becoming VTP for conducting MES courses:

¹ Institutes (including autonomous institutes) set up by Central Government / State Governments / UT Administrations.

¹ Private Institutes of repute affiliated/ accredited to a Board / University / Council (NCVT, AICTE etc.) set up by Central Government / State Governments / UT Administrations

¹ Any other type of institutions/ bodies approved by Apex committee

q MES framework is a new concept for skill development. During 2007-08 i.e. first year of implementation, necessary management structures at National, Regional and State level (Apex committee, NPMC, Regional Cells, State Committees, State Cells) for managing and monitoring the scheme would be setup. Development of assessment tools and learning material would be done. Assessing bodies would be selected. State Governments and other stakeholders would be familiarised with the scheme procedures. Pilot programmes would be run for validating effectiveness of systems and procedures. Therefore, focus during the first year would be on development work and pilot programmes. There would be constraints in terms of reach of assessing bodies as well as budget availability. Accordingly, only 10,000 persons are to be trained / tested in the 2007-08. It would be required to take up implementation in select states (say 2 States/ UTs from each of the regions) and select cities in the first year and then gradually implement the scheme in other States/ UTs. States/UTs which accept terms, conditions and roles of States and ITIs prescribed under the scheme will be eligible to participate in the scheme.

''MBA Essentials Curriculum''

SS&C’s Zoologic ''MBA Essentials Curriculum'' Selected by Rutgers Business School
Online courseware provides greater flexibility for MBA students

WINDSOR, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)

SS&C Technologies, Inc. (www.ssctech.com), a global provider of financial services software and software-enabled services, today announced that Rutgers Business School has partnered with SS&C’s Zoologic Learning Solutions to offer its MBA Essentials program to all full-time MBA students. Rutgers Business School has implemented its new full-time MBA curriculum and now offers the MBA Essentials program to all students enrolled in the Rutgers Business School program.

“We are very excited to offer Zoologic’s MBA Essentials program,” said Glenn Berman, Assistant Dean for Admissions of Rutgers Business School. “The knowledge gained by the Zoologic courses will provide our students greater flexibility and enable them to take a deeper approach into our core curriculum.”

Zoologic’s MBA Essentials courses baseline all incoming students, allowing students to enter Rutgers’ MBA program with the same knowledge base. The pre-matriculation course topics include business math, statistics, accounting, corporate finance, and microeconomics. In addition to web-based courseware, SS&C’s Zoologic Learning Solutions include instructor-led training, blended learning, custom course development, and a knowledge-on-demand reference tool.

Rutgers Business School is able to offer a more rigorous MBA curriculum knowing that students are entering with a higher knowledge base. In addition, the MBA Essentials program enables faculty to better assess incoming students and determine the courses they can waive.

“The ability to provide students a better opportunity for success is the primary benefit of our Zoologic MBA Essentials program,” said Bill Stone, Chairman and CEO, SS&C Technologies, Inc. “We are very proud to partner with Rutgers Business School and be part of their new full-time MBA curriculum.”

Rutgers Business School’s MBA graduates will benefit from rigorous training that provides them with critical-thinking skills, specialized knowledge, and the creative ability to shape that knowledge to fit particular managerial challenges they face in their careers.
